North-West University (NWU) alumnus Berlina Lekgethwane could very well be the next Mrs South Africa.
She has recently entered the 2023 competition and has advanced to the semi-finals.
Berlina, who was born and bred in Ramokokastad in the Phadi village, graduated from the NWU's Mahikeng Campus with a BA in communications and an honours degree in social sciences psychology. She also holds a master's degree in business administration from Mancosa and is currently pursuing another master's degree in public administration from the same institution.
Berlina, who is currently the media and communication manager at the Moses Kotane local municipality, says she is in the competition to win it.
“I entered the competition with the intention of winning the crown, but as I delved deeper, I realised what the competition is truly about. It is not about fame or beauty, but rather the betterment of the country.”
She participates in a variety of transformational programmes, such as encouraging farming among the youth, a matric second chances mentoring programme, and clean-up campaigns.
"I want to help young people to gain confidence, and would also like to assist those who are struggling to make ends meet,” she says.
“I want young rural boys and girls to have greater control over their futures by giving them access to more opportunities. I've always been an outspoken go-getter, and despite my parents' inability to fund my education, I was able to create opportunities for myself by virtue of my attitude and character. I worked additional jobs and applied for bursaries until I achieved my goals,” she explains.
