Two members of the North-West University’s (NWU) alumni fraternity, Arnu van Wyk and Dedre Uys, have received nationwide acclaim after being ranked among the South African Top 15 students for the November 2018 CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) exams.
CIMA is regarded as the world’s leading management accountancy professional association.
The CIMA examinations represent an international benchmarking accomplishment and see students from 179 countries around the globe taking part each year under the auspices of The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. The latter boasts a membership of more than 667 000 members.
According to Prof Sanlie Middelberg, one of the lecturers in the CIMA programme in the School of Accounting Sciences, the annual CIMA exams are written by honours students within the BCom Management Accounting programme. The exam – called Management Case Study – is compiled by academic professionals in the United Kingdom.
“The CIMA exam results are truly a reflection of the NWU’s continued commitment in terms of the delivery of knowledgeable professionals and international competitiveness,” says Prof Middelberg and adds that the university is very proud of Arnu and Dedre’s performance.
Both Arnu and Dedre attended the prestige CIMA Gauteng graduation ceremony in Pretoria during which Steven Swientozielskyj, CIMA president, awarded them as part of the Gauteng province’s top performing cohort.
More about the CIMA examination
Prof Middelberg explains that in order for a participant to pass the examination, an average of 80% is required. The exam is written in February, May, August and November of each year.
In essence CIMA is a business qualification with the aim to empower professionals to identify and manage risks and develop implementable strategies to ensure business success.
