North-West University (NWU) nursing student Mecayla Johnson will represent South Africa at the 46th International WorldSkills Competition after winning the WorldSkills South Africa Occupational Standards national competition.
Mecayla represented the NWU at the national competition from 8 to 12 March 2026 in KwaZulu-Natal where she competed against seven participants from across the country. They were tested on their knowledge and grasp of their respective talents in simulated hospital and clinic scenarios.
From 22 to 27 September 2026 Mecayla will be putting her skills to the test in Shanghai, China, where she will be competing against hundreds of participants from across the world.
Mecayla says she feels honoured and grateful to have made it this far in the competition.
“I feel proud of the hard work and dedication I put into preparing for the competition, and it’s rewarding to see that effort recognised. At the same time, it is an emotional moment because of the journey it took to get here,” says the fourth-year nursing student.
“I am grateful for the School of Nursing on the Mahikeng Campus for their support and effort during my preparation. This achievement has boosted my confidence and reminded me why I am so passionate about health and social care,” she adds.
Acknowledging Mecayla’s outstanding performance Grace Baakeleng, senior lecturer at the School of Nursing, says they are very proud of her.
“This achievement is a highlight for the School of Nursing. Her success is also a reflection of the excellent education and training and support she received from the school team which includes both academic and support staff, we are proud of the impact the staff and students are making,” she says.

The 48th WorldSkills International Competition hosted in Shanghai, China later this year will feature over 1 600 competitors from more than 70 countries and regions, competing in over 63 skills in various fields. WorldSkills competitions create a global platform to develop and help young people who want to change the lives and the fortunes of their communities and societies.
