North-West University PhD candidate Ntokozo Happy Msiza is one of only four young people that have been selected to represent South Africa at an agricultural summer school at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
The summer school will take place from 21 July to 4 August, and is a joint effort between the board of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and the University of São Paulo to foster agricultural expertise and knowledge exchange. The programme, titled "Tropical Bio-based Production Systems", provides a unique opportunity for young individuals with a strong agricultural background.
The summer school is targeted at young people aged 18 to 35, and aims to offer insight into the technologies, economics, and environmental aspects of Brazilian agriculture, forestry, and livestock farming through theoretical classes and technical visits.
Ntokozo, a student from the NWU’s subject group Animal Sciences, says she feels incredibly fortunate and excited to have been selected for this wonderful opportunity.
“This is my second time applying for the agricultural summer school, and I am immensely grateful that, by the Grace of God, I was accepted after being unsuccessful last year.
“The opportunity holds a special significance for me, as it reinforces my belief in perseverance and the importance of never giving up on your dreams. Upon my return, it will be my responsibility to contribute to the enrichment of our country by applying the skills and knowledge I would have acquired in Brazil. I am looking forward to making a positive impact and help create a more food-secure nation,” adds Ntokozo.
