Community engagement also means fun!

Every year the Tourism honours-degree group hosts a golf day aimed at giving the students experience in hosting an event and making a difference in their lives. The students have been unable to host this golf day since the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this year they managed to do so and raised approximately R70 000 for a bursary fund for postgraduate students in the Tourism programme.

The golf day commenced on 22 July 2022 at the Irene Country Club in Centurion. The group developed skills such as time management, fundraising, building relationships with clients and proper teamwork. Staff and students also managed to establish valuable relationships with the industry during this process. Overall, the success of the practical assignment was visible not just in the funds raised and the success of the event itself, but also in the experience gained and lessons learned by the students taking part in this unique learning experience.

Earlier in 2022, the third-year Tourism students enjoyed a group discussion session on the grass in front of the Library on the Potchefstroom Campus. Due to the Covid restrictions, this was deemed an innovative way in which the students could meet, greet and have discussions in their designated groups.
