The Totius Hall recently came alive with joyous uproars, infectious laughter, clever punchlines, and a sense of excitement.
The NWU Comedy Night, a vibrant evening of comedic fire, was not just about telling jokes. It was an evening where humour ignited possibility and laughter played a crucial role in paving the way for students to continue their studies.
An amazing lineup lit up the stage, all coming together for the common purpose of raising funds for the NWU We Care Bursary Fund, an initiative which provides financial aid for students in need.
“Each laugh brought hope to someone’s future,” said Silvanus Welcome, Director of Development and Fundraising. “That is what made the night so memorable.”
Humour with a heartbeat
The night’s energy was charged by award-winning host Virgil Prins, a crowd favourite who is known for his sharp humour and on-point social commentary. He not only steered the show, but also had the audience in stitches with his signature style.
Jaxx Justice, a fearless comedienne and social critic, opened the evening by calling out uncomfortable truths with a humorous twist. Her socially aware humour struck the right chord with the student audience.
But it was two student comedians, Msawawa and Karabo, who stole the show with their short but amazing seven-minute sets.
One audience member remarked that Msawawa was “GREAT”, a sentiment echoed by more than 80% of the post-event feedback, which rated the show as “very good” to “excellent”.
The student performers were hilarious and truly represented the significance of the event. The audience witnessed NWU’s commitment to fostering local talent and helping those in financial need.
Headliner
Veteran actor and comedian Hannes Brümmer gave a masterclass in improvised comedy as the headline performer. His lively delivery had everyone in stitches, ensuring the show was a hit.
“What made the comedians a perfect fit for the night is that they reflected the diverse and inclusive spirit of today’s NWU, blending languages, cultures and perspectives to engage a broad audience,” explained Welcome.
Exciting plans are in the works for future comedy nights. The NWU’s model of blending performance with charitable giving could become a wonderful regular event where laughter and kindness come together.
