The North-West University (NWU) is justifiably proud of its alumni and recognises them for their personal and career accomplishments, and for their exemplary contributions to society. One such an alumnus is Edward Kieswetter, the newly appointed Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Edward, who will commence his duties at SARS on 1 May 2019, completed his MCom degree in South African and international tax law with distinction at the NWU in 2004.
As a passionate supporter of the philosophy of lifelong learning, Edward’s academic career saw him obtain qualifications from several national and international institutions. These include the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the University of Cape Town, Harvard University, the University of the Western Cape, the Henley Business School and Stanford University.
The 60-year-old Edward was previously involved with SARS, first as chief operating officer and later as deputy commissioner. The latter saw him being part of the leadership team under the stewardship of Pravin Gordhan. This team was responsible for the launch of a very successful modernisation programme, that included the innovative e-filing platform and the establishment of the large business centre (LBC).
Having enjoyed experience in both the private and public sector, Edward has been lauded in the media as the “best man for the job” and all eyes will be on him to restore revenue collection while also driving the necessary organisational change. According to media statements, Edward’s appointment was unanimously approved by the interviewing panel.
His impressive curriculum vitae speaks of a man with vast experience and great leadership attributes. He has had a varied career with many organisations, including Alexander Forbes and parastatals Eskom and Transnet. He originally trained as an electrical engineer and started his career as an instrumental engineer at Caltex in Cape Town. While working, he studied towards several education qualifications and, obtained his master’s degree in science education and cognitive development. Apart from this qualification, he also holds an executive MBA from Henley Business School and a degree in national and international tax law from the NWU.
