Middle-distance runner Luan Munnik, competing in his first World Indoor Championships in Poland, finished seventh in the men’s 3000 m final heat on Saturday 21 March, achieving a personal best time of 7:37.94. The NWU star rose to the occasion and showed no fear on the global stage.
For Luan, who had faced injury challenges and had not been able to run for over three years, securing seventh place while achieving a personal best represents progress and dedication.
“This is more special to me than words can describe. What truly makes it meaningful is everything that led to that moment, even more than the performance itself,” said Munnik.
“I am proud of my race, my time, and of representing South Africa, but it’s the journey that stands out. There was a period during my undergraduate years when I couldn’t run at all for over three years. It was confusing and incredibly difficult, and many athletes might have given up.”
Even when faced with adversity, Munnik found a way through. “I held on, believing that it would be worth it. I would not trade that struggle for anything; it has made me the athlete and person I am today. That is why this moment means so much to me.”
The Postgraduate Diploma in Management student completed the 15-lap race one second outside the South African record of 7:36.90, set by Tshepo Tshitse at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in France in February. For Munnik, being able to compete with the best and show what a South African can do is remarkable.
“My coach always reminded me that the athletes we admire are only human, and I truly understood that when I lined up against them and beat some of them. That’s when it clicked that I belong at this level too,” he stated.
Munnik also praised his coach, Jean Verster, for his guidance and support, which played a crucial role in shaping his journey.
“Coach Verster saw the champion in me long before I could see it in myself, and he never stopped believing. That kind of unwavering belief is rare, and it’s something I will always carry with me.”
