On request of the family of the late Prof Dan Kgwadi, former principal and vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), a memorial service to honour him was held on 4 May 2023 at the Mahikeng Campus.
Prof Kgwadi passed away on 30 April 2023.
Many speakers paid tribute to him during the memorial service, describing him as a visionary leader who was committed to making a difference in the lives of students and the wider community.
NWU vice-chancellor Prof Bismark Tyobeka says Prof Kgwadi’s passing is a huge loss for the university and the education sector as a whole.
“Today we pay tribute to the late Prof Ntate Daniel Kgwadi, a true humanitarian and dear friend whom I had the privilege of knowing for almost 30 years. He was not only a leader in higher education, but also a compassionate and empathetic individual who always took the time to listen to others and offer a kind word or a helping hand. As we mourn this loss, let us remember his unwavering commitment to social justice and his mission to give back to those in need, both in his community and at the university,” said Prof Tyobeka.
“His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, and it is up to all of us to carry on his work and build upon the foundations he laid. Rest in peace, Prof Kgwadi.”
North West Premier Mr Bushy Maape also attended the memorial and said that Prof Kgwadi had a good working relationship with the provincial executive, particularly in assisting the government to respond to various challenges through research in various fields while he was at the helm of the NWU.
“We have a sound working relationship with the university and this is largely through his efforts. We will continue to work with the NWU to preserve and honour his legacy, and to address the plight of students from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds.
“I would like to take this opportunity and send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” said Premier Maape.
Prof Kgwadi had a distinguished career in education, serving as the vice-chancellor of the NWU for eight years before joining VUT. He was also the rector of the Mahikeng Campus of the NWU. During his tenure, he was widely credited with transforming the NWU, and he was a champion of transformation and social justice in the education sector.
