Master’s student is the best teacher in the district

In the words of American inspirational author William Arthur Ward, "Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding."

This quote deeply resonates with Tumelo Malebelela, deputy principal at Molelwane Secondary School in Mahikeng, who was born and bred in a township called Atamelang.

Tumelo, currently pursuing a master's degree at the North-West University (NWU), clinched the prestigious title of ultimate district winner in the Best Teacher category during the 2024 North West Provincial Teaching Awards. No stranger to excellence, he also received the Excellence Award in the Secondary School category in 2023.

Tumelo says this achievement is a dream come true. “I have always dreamt of being the best teacher and producing great learners. I am motivated to be the best because I believe there is no better opportunity to make a difference in other people's lives than to be a teacher. The joy I get from changing lives for the better keeps me going. As a teacher, I am all about giving, but being given the recognition for doing something I love and enjoy is quite overwhelming," he adds.

He says he hopes his success would motivate his peers to work hard and to know it is possible.

Teaching to him represents a vocation rather than a mere occupation - it provides the opportunity to contribute to developing a global citizenry and to have a positive impact on the community.

“It is very important that young educators should have a passion for their work that they should realise that their guidance and instruction are paramount in delivering the leaders of tomorrow. Giving your best with vigour leads to excellence,” adds Tumelo.

The provincial winners in their respective categories will now advance to the National Teaching Awards that will take place later this year.
