Make your CV stand out

Since the lockdown commenced, a number of businesses have had to close indefinitely, leaving thousands of South Africans unemployed. With so many people in the job market, jobseekers have to find new ways to stand out from the crowd.

Dr Peet Roos, Ms Suzanne de Swart and Mr Mphinyana Nemasitoni from the Career Centre at the North-West University (NWU) have decided to give jobseekers advice on the correct way to structure their curriculum vitae (CV).

They state that a CV is the first impression that is created before an interview. A well-structured CV can therefore definitely make a difference to an individual’s success in searching for a job.

A neat CV in which information is easy to find is key. “Recruiters have to scan through hundreds – if not thousands – of CVs for every vacancy. You would not want your CV to be disregarded because of a technical issue. If jobseekers understand the requirements of a vacancy and structure their CVs in a way that highlights their knowledge and skills they will be on the right track to success.”

The Career Centre team states that jobseekers need to ensure that their CVs do not display bad grammar and spelling errors. A CV without logical, clear and descriptive headings makes it difficult to find specific information.

Long sentences are difficult to read, and very short points do not give enough information. Job seekers must elaborate only on important facts that need clarity.

They add that having your picture on your CV is not important. “The global job market is inclined to employ a non-discrimination policy, so the habit of including a picture is becoming outdated, unless you are looking for a job in which looks are important, such as a modelling or a television gig.”
