Planting a tree may take only a few minutes, but its impact can last for generations. This message took root at the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) when staff and students came together to commemorate Arbor Day through a tree-planting initiative.
The event, organised by the office of the campus chief director, took place on 22 September 2026 on the lawn next to the Great Hall. It brought members of the campus community together to plant trees and strengthen the commitment of the university to creating a greener and healthier environment.
The initiative forms part of the continued efforts of the NWU to promote environmental sustainability across its campuses. It also encouraged staff and students to take responsibility for protecting the natural environment and to recognise the important role that trees play in sustainable communities.
The 2026 event builds on previous tree-planting initiatives at the university.
Tree planting has since remained part of the wider environmental sustainability efforts of the NWU. The environmental programmes of the university include initiatives aimed at raising awareness among staff and students and encouraging participation in activities that contribute to greener campuses.
Beyond improving the appearance of the campus, trees can help create healthier and more resilient environments. They provide shade, support biodiversity and contribute to cleaner air. The NWU has previously described tree planting as an investment in the well-being of both the environment and future generations.
The Mahikeng Campus also has an established tree route that celebrates the natural heritage of the university. The route features about 30 trees and forms part of a broader NWU initiative to promote environmental awareness and appreciation of trees across its campuses.
Through the 2026 Arbor Day initiative, the campus community once again had an opportunity to turn environmental awareness into practical action. Each tree planted represents another contribution towards a greener campus and a reminder that sustainability depends on actions taken today.
