Mahikeng-bred Kamogelo Mongale (25) is filled with pure determination to be the best in the disciplined world of karate.

This NWU Mahikeng Campus Computer Science and Mathematics student, who is currently in his fourth year of study, has had a love for karate since starting with the sport in his primary school years. He started training at Mmabana Arts Culture and Sport Foundation in Mmabatho and has not looked back since.

He currently has a brown belt in this martial arts form, just one belt below an elusive black belt. If his passion is anything to go by, then it will only be a matter of time until he gets rewarded with that black belt.

Kamogelo was selected to represent Team SA in Brasilia, Brazil at the FISU World University Games for Combat Sports in June this year. This further showcased his talent and ability and gave him extra confidence to make it to the top of the sport.

“I am most proud of the lessons I received, the discipline and confidence it provides. My biggest achievement so far in the sport is being recognised by USSA karate as one of the elites of the sport,” he states.

For Kamogelo, karate provides enjoyment and fun in the competitive environment he is in against fellow athletes.

“Karate gives me the ability to showcase my level best alongside talented athletes. What makes karate challenging, in my opinion, is the intense physical conditioning and mental discipline that is required.”

He also believes that there are no limits in karate and that he can achieve more than he believes possible due to discipline, self-confidence and channelling of his energy.

“What motivates me most is the support I get from my team and family, as well as the idea of me improving beyond my limits,” mentions Kamogelo.

Outside of karate, he enjoys the company of friends and family and sees himself as a welcoming and loving individual. “In my off time, I like being around my family and friends, just enjoying simple moments of life.
