Lira and the NWU join forces to celebrate Women’s Day

“A charming woman doesn’t follow the crowd; she is herself”. This the mantra of South African singer Lerato Molapo, professionally known as Lira.

Lira was the guest performer at the North West University’s (NWU’s) women’s day celebration on 8 August at the campus in Potchefstroom.

The event was attended by staff and students from across the NWU.

Dr Corrie Rheeder, director for student life, welcomed everyone on behalf of the NWU management. “We are privileged to celebrate all the special qualities that make us different from men, and we should embrace and celebrate our womanhood,” she said.

Lira’s motivational message focused on inspiring limitless potential in women, a matter that is very close to her heart. She spoke about her struggles, how she rose from the ashes and how she managed to overcome them. She also encouraged women to be themselves and not to conform to the standards set by society.

Lira emphasised the importance of getting a good education and motivated the women to follow their heart and never give up on their dreams.

Lira was recently bestowed the honor of being the first African to have a Barbie doll that was made in her likeness.

The crowd roared with excitement when she performed her rendition of the song “Something inside so strong”.

Considering the challenges women face today, this song was the perfect choice. It makes a strong statement about standing up for not only basic human rights, but also for respect, tolerance and dignity.

While many might think of Women’s Day as a good excuse to spend a day being pampered, we should remember the significance of the day and what it is truly about. On this day we celebrate the achievements of women of the past and present, throughout the world. Moreover, we celebrate the day when 20 000 women of all races marched to Pretoria’s Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to present a petition to the prime minister, demonstrating their disdain for being forced to carry passes.
