Let your old clothes live!

The Faculty of Law at the North-West University is collecting unwanted clothing, shoes and ties to distribute to communities and students in need.

Dr Neo Morei, executive dean at the Faculty of Law, decided to implement the project.

“When I was growing up, I had minimal clothing and would sometimes walk barefoot because I had no shoes, and I would often also carry my books in a plastic shopping bag because I did not have a school bag,” she says.

When she began working, she would go on shopping sprees and buy countless amounts of clothes and shoes, some of which she would not even get to wear, and it resulted in the hoarding of clothes and shoes.

“I gave some clothes to my helpers, but I wanted to do more.”

She became fascinated with the idea of having a garage sale, but she wanted to donate her clothes and not sell her clothes. In 2019, with the support of her colleagues and the faculty, she decided to initiate the clothing project.

“The joy that I felt from distributing the donated clothes, shoes and school bags to the needy in 2019 was amazing. The fact that I can give a dress, T-shirt or a pair of shoes to someone, brings joy to my heart.”

“For me, this comes from the heart. I remember how I used to envy people with nice clothes. Now it is my chance to share my nice clothes and also get other people to donate their clothes to the needy in order to make a difference in someone’s life,” she adds.

Dr Morei is proud of her ability to have conceived a project that will have a positive impact on disadvantaged communities and people in need.
