A public lecture at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus on 1 October 2025 highlighted how telecommunications and information technology are transforming financial management for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), both in business operations and personal finance.
The lecture was delivered by Mpho Morudu, senior manager for Fintech at MTNSA, who spoke about how communication technologies continue to shape industries and create new career opportunities.
Mpho explained that telecommunication has evolved from basic message delivery systems to complex digital networks that drive the modern economy.
“The development of the telegraph and Morse code marked a significant milestone in communication technology,” he said. “From those early innovations to today’s smartphones and artificial intelligence, we have seen how technology changes the way we connect and do business.”
He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital tools, forcing businesses and professionals to adapt quickly. “Today, we live in a digital age where communication technologies have transformed industries and careers. The shift from selling products to selling services has given rise to new professions such as media analysts and social media managers.”
Mpho stressed that SMMEs play a vital role in economic growth but often face barriers such as limited funding and access to markets. “Although small businesses face many challenges, those that innovate and embrace technology can improve efficiency and competitiveness,” he added.
He encouraged entrepreneurs to seek financial support and invest in digital solutions to expand their operations. “Technology is no longer optional; it is essential for business survival. Digital platforms help bridge financial gaps and empower small businesses to grow and thrive.”
The lecture forms part of the university’s ongoing efforts to expose students to current trends in business and technology, equipping them with knowledge relevant to South Africa’s evolving digital economy.
