Sport, money, careers and technology were the focus of the “4-in-1” event held at Khayalethu Residence on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus to prepare students for life in and outside the lecture room.
The programme, held on 7 March, started with an aerobics marathon and a five-a-side inter-block soccer tournament.
The formal programme followed, with a financial literacy session and an academic symposium on the NWU’s artificial intelligence (AI) policy.
Absa Group financial advisor Koketso Lekhu led the session on financial literacy, including budgeting, saving and spending decisions.
“Students who understand how money works are able to plan for their future,” said Koketso. “Budgeting and saving are skills that help them make decisions that affect their studies and their lives after university.”
Use AI responsibly
During the academic symposium Dr Thamie Ndlovu, an educational technologist, said the university has clear academic guidelines for the use of AI.
“The university allows students to use AI as a tool to assist them in their studies, but it must be used responsibly,” said Dr Ndlovu.
Technology should support academic work rather than replace it, he said. “AI can guide students during research, but it should not produce all the answers. Students must still analyse information and complete their own work.”
Students also visited information stalls hosted by NWU Career Services, offering guidance on career preparation and employment opportunities, while Campus Health Services shared information on student health and stress management.
Residence organisers said the event was designed to bring different support services closer to students so that they can interact directly with professionals and university units that support their development.
By combining sport, financial education, career guidance and technology awareness students had access to information they can apply during their university years and beyond.
