The Student Campus Council (SCC) on the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, in conjunction with the Community Stakeholder Engagement (CSE) Council, launched a Soup Drive to help students to cope during the exams and to remain nourished and healthy amidst loadshedding and economic pressures.
The SCC launched the initiative under the slogan "We are the SCC that cares". Sponsored by Student Life and the Finance Department, the drive will continue until the end of exams.
Thus far the Soup Drive has already served more than 400 students.
SCC spokesperson Sindisa Xakushe says they want to keep students motivated to continue studying during these cold winter days, especially those who are short on funds.
“This is a very tough year for many students. Not everyone got NSFAS funding, and many are writing exams on empty stomachs,” explains Sindisa.
She encourages the other campuses and student sub-structures to also give back to their students by following in their footsteps.
Dr Sean McCallaghan, director for student life, says this is an important initiative that aligns with the university's ethic of care.
"This is an effort to support students during exam time. We understand that some may not have the necessary funds to provide themselves with proper nutrition. As such, we are committed to providing assistance in this area to ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed," he adds.
Prof Linda Du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, says it is heartening to see the positive impact of the Soup Drive on the students.
"It's a reminder that small acts of kindness can go a long way in making a difference in people's lives. The Soup Drive is a powerful example of how people can come together to support each other during difficult times. Let us all take inspiration from the SCC's initiative and do our part to positively impact lives. We always say when you join the NWU, you join a university family – and this Soup drives confirms our ethic of care.”
