How to help your anxious children during lockdown

The Covid-19 lockdown brings with it a number of emotional challenges, not only for adults but also for children.

With schools being closed, and children not being able to spend time with their friends and extended family members, it can increase their anxiety and make it harder for them to cope during these uncertain times.

The Institute of Psychology and Wellbeing at the North-West University (NWU) is hosting three webinars that will give parents a practical plan for alleviating anxiety in children.

Although the management of anxiety requires a tailor-made intervention, there is much a parent can do at home to support children at home.

The 45-minute long webinars will be held on Friday 24 April at 11am, Wednesday 29 April at 11am and Thursday 30 April at 11am.

During these sessions Hanlie Degenaar, a senior speech-language therapist, will give parents a 10-point plan to help them support their children during lockdown.

Apart from the wealth of information from the sessions, parents and caregivers will receive a detailed pamphlet containing all the strategies and ideas that were mentioned in the webinar and links to helpful resources.

Staff members who want to join the webinars must send an email to IPWinfo@nwu.ac.za to receive the Zoom meeting ID.
