How healthy lifestyles can address type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is on the rise in South Africa and the North-West University (NWU) is responding by raising awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles.

The prevalence of this condition has increased in recent years due to diets rich in processed food, sugary drinks, a lack of exercise and obesity.

According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is among the top 10 leading causes of mortality globally, with South Africa witnessing a significant increase in cases, from 4,5% in 2010 to 12,7% in 2019.

Prof Sithandiswa Mazibuko-Mbeje and Dr Zibele Ndlovu are the principal investigators of a community engagement project to promote healthy living and the use of natural products in the prevention and management of T2D.

The project is titled “Natural products for the management of type 2 diabetes: you are what you eat”, and aims to inform the NWU community and the broader public about the importance of early screening and lifestyle choices in lowering the risk of diabetes.

Moringa in daily diets

One focus of the project is the medicinal plant moringa oleifera, which has properties that may help prevent metabolic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Prof Mazibuko-Mbeje and Dr Ndlovu are investigating how including moringa in daily diets, such as in smoothies, tea and juice, may help reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.

“Natural products such as moringa have shown promising results in supporting health. By incorporating these into daily meals, we aim to help the community make informed choices,” says Prof Mazibuko-Mbeje.

Participants undergo free screening for blood glucose and hypertension – tests that typically cost around R300. The results will assist the NWU campus clinic in developing plans for individuals identified as prediabetic or diabetic.

“Early detection is important,” says Prof Mazibuko-Mbeje. “By identifying people at risk early, we can take measures to manage or prevent further complications.”

Additionally, the project educates NWU students and the surrounding community on healthy meal options that can lower the risk of diabetes. The inclusion of antioxidants in these meals is emphasised, and moringa is highlighted as a beneficial option for everyday consumption.

This initiative underscores the importance of raising awareness about diabetes and demonstrates how natural products and lifestyle changes can help in prevention. This community engagement project is a key platform for promoting health and well-being within the NWU community.
