First jubilation, then the blues. This was the story of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) two-day stint in Bloemfontein during the recent leg of their Varsity Netball campaign.
On Sunday 8 September the sweet couldn’t be any sweeter as they squashed the University of Johannesburg 68-35 at the Callie Human Hall. The NWU team was off to a rollicking start and secured a 21-8 lead, stretching it to 33-21 by half time, and setting the pace with 53-25 in the third quarter.
The NWU’s Monique Reyneke also walked away with both the FNB Player of the Match and the MTN Interceptor of the Match award.
Unfortunately, from this dizzying height a disappointing low awaited, and in their next encounter against home-side Kovsies the NWU lost 59-54 in a very tough game.
The NWU was in the lead with 16-11 after the first quarter, but by half time Kovies had turned the tables to 31-28, and at the end of the third quarter they were firmly in control with 48-35.
The valiant NWU did however secure two bonus points for scoring more than 50 points and for losing by less than seven, and now occupies the fourth position on the overall log.
We wish them all the best in taking on the Tswane University of Technology on 15 September in Pretoria.
