HART researcher steps into key SA Heart® leadership role

Researchers from the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) at the North-West University (NWU) are making meaningful contributions to cardiovascular health in southern Africa. A member of this dedicated team, Prof Ruan Kruger, will now also contribute to the workings of the professional organisation representing cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons in South Africa – SA Heart®.

In this part-time, six-month appointment that began on 1 August, Prof Kruger will play a pivotal role in strengthening the operational and governance bridge between the board of SA Heart® and its management team. SA Heart®, well-known for its research, advocacy and publication of the respected SA Heart® Journal, aims to advance cardiovascular care through scientific excellence, leadership and collaboration.

Prof Kruger explains that SA Heart® has, for some time, considered whether the organisation would benefit from dedicated executive leadership. “This interim period serves as a test to determine if an executive director can drive meaningful change,” he says. “As a current board member, I was asked to step into the role to provide stability and strategic insight.” Following this trial period, the association will review the position with the possibility of extending the appointment permanently.

He notes that although he is not a cardiologist, he views the opportunity as an honour and a challenge. “I believe my background gives me a fresh perspective. I am eager to learn more about the internal structures of SA Heart®, its network of stakeholders and the key challenges it faces. My goal is to foster inclusion, harness volunteer expertise and help the organisation grow in strength and purpose.”

Prof Kruger emphasises that the position not only allows him to serve the broader medical community but also has direct benefits for the NWU. “SA Heart® is internationally recognised and supported by leading institutions such as the European Society of Cardiology. This is a valuable connection, especially in the context of the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine at the NWU, and the need to expand access to cardiovascular expertise in North West.”

Looking ahead, he sees his role as a catalyst for sustainable leadership within SA Heart®. “It is about building momentum, strengthening communication with stakeholders and reinforcing the relevance and value of the organisation in the healthcare space. This is an opportunity to align operational efficiency with visionary leadership.”
