Golden Key Southern Africa recently held a ceremony at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus to recognise and welcome new Golden Key International Honour Society members. The event celebrated the achievements of more than 200 members who were inaugurated.

Golden Key is the world's largest honour society, founded in 1977 at Georgia State University. It recognises academic achievement and connects brilliant minds worldwide, with more than 2,4 million members from 400 universities. Lifetime membership offers influential networks, leadership and career development, and community service opportunities. The Southern Africa Chapter was established in 2000.

It was the first in-person ceremony since the onset of the pandemic, and it was a momentous occasion for all involved. During the ceremony, Gillian Cloete, the director of Golden Key Southern Africa, extended a warm welcome to the new members and acknowledged their achievements. She spoke about Golden Key's values: excellence, innovation, research, and student engagement.

"Being part of the Golden Key community is truly an achievement worth celebrating. It's an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals worldwide and participate in various activities and events to enhance one's skills and overall university experience. As members of Golden Key, we are privileged to have access to a supportive network that can help us succeed in our academic and personal pursuits," she said.

She further thanked Golden Key Southern Africa for its commitment to promoting education and providing students with opportunities to succeed. She encouraged the new members to be people of good character, upholding high moral and ethical standards and thanked the committee chapter advisors who gave their time, guidance, and expertise to the society.

The event also saw Velaze Vinolia Mabele inducted as an honorary member of the Golden Key. Velaze, a multi-talented entrepreneur, actress, master of ceremonies, philanthropist, radio host and model, was presented with a Golden Key medal and a personalised honorary membership certificate. Her role will unite students with university, corporate, and community leaders.

Mbali Kubeka, the Vanderbijlpark Campus chapter chairperson, congratulated the new members. “I hope you will share in our goals of recognising academic achievement, promoting leadership and serving our community,” she said.

Prof Linda du Plessis, the NWU’s deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, delivered the keynote address and congratulated the new members. 

"You are among the top 10% of performers, and are likely to be performers for the future," she said, adding that with consistent effort and dedication, they can set an example for others and inspire them to achieve their goals too.
