Former NWU VC celebrates daughter’s graduation

It was a blissful day for Prof Ntate Dan Kgwadi, former North-West University (NWU) principal and vice-chancellor, as his only child Ofentse Kgwadi graduated recently.

Ofentse was among the droves of NWU graduates who were conferred degrees at a graduation ceremony held at Kompas Gemeente in Vanderbijlpark.

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, Prof Kgwadi, who was expected to be part of the NWU graduation procession, could not witness the moment. Prof Kgwadi recently assumed office as vice-chancellor at the Vaal University of Technology.

24-year-old Ofentse, was accompanied by her mother, Mable Kgwadi, graduated with a BAHons degree in industrial and organisational psychology. After graduation, Ofentse visited her father at his office, where he congratulated her on her achievement.

"This is a very joyous moment for me, and I am so proud of my daughter's achievement. It is always nice to see her grow. She always told me that her dream was to have my signature on her certificate, but unfortunately, she graduated after I had left the NWU," says Prof Kgwadi.

Ofentse, who attributed her achievements to the support of her parents, friends and lecturers, says she is happy and proud that all the hard work she put in finally paid off.

"It was not an easy journey. Having a dad who is a top academic achiever has its pressures, and I had no choice but to follow in his footsteps.".

She reveals that even though she grew up privileged and received all the attention as an only child, her parents were very firm with her.

"Though my parents answered to my every whim, they showed me the realities of the world and taught me responsibility. I am grateful for that,” she adds.

Ofentse reveals that none of her classmates knew she was Prof Kgwadi's daughter, and that only a few lecturers knew.

Ofentse is currently studying for her master's degree, and aims to follow it up with a PhD.

"I'm excited about the next chapter in life. However, I do not want to be in the academics like my father, and would rather to have my own consultancy firm in future," she says.

....

A joyous moment: Ofentse and Prof Dan Kgwadi celebrate her degree.
