Former North West MEC obtains PhD

Manketsi Emily Tlhape, former member of the executive committee (MEC) of North West and current member of the South African national parliament, received her PhD in economic management science with business administration from the North-West University (NWU) on 21 June 2023.

Manketsi's thesis, titled “Development of a strategic management framework for communal property associations in South Africa,” focused on the sustainability of communal property association enterprises.

Her study highlighted the significance of strategic management profiles, employee processes, and governance accountability in these associations. Notably, this research was the first to develop and estimate a model for these struggling enterprises.

The findings of Manketsi's study have reinforced the role of communal property associations as catalysts for revitalising and restoring land reform enterprises. Through this strategic approach, these associations offer hope for job creation and poverty reduction in rural areas.

Originally from Sannieshof in Tswaing Municipality, Manketsi began her career as a professional nurse and later served as a manager for health services in the sub-district.

Her educational background includes a postgraduate degree in governance and leadership, master's degrees in public health and business administration, as well as various certificate courses – including policy development, financial management and labour relations.

Throughout her career, Manketsi has held several key positions, including mayor of Tswaing Municipality, MEC for local government and traditional affairs, and MEC for rural, environment, agriculture, and development in the North West. In 2019, she was elected as a member of parliament and currently serves as a whip for the portfolio committee of agriculture, land reform, and rural development in the South African parliament.

Her dedication to public service, combined with her academic achievements, exemplifies her commitment to making a positive impact on society. With her extensive knowledge and experience, she continues to contribute to the development and progress of South Africa.
