Two North-West University (NWU) students from the Mahikeng Campus are challenging stereotypes and making a name for themselves in the male-dominated sport of bodybuilding.
Kudzi Mudzingwa and Nomthandazo Portia Galate are not only stepping onto the stage in the Ladies Bikini Fitness category, but also reshaping perceptions and inspiring others through their dedication and resilience.
Nomthandazo has achieved remarkable success in just two years. Her journey in bodybuilding has been one of determination and overcoming challenges, marking her as a rising star in the sport. She earned second place at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament, first place at provincial level (Ladies Bikini Junior under 23 years), and third place at national level.
Kudzi, who competes in the Ladies Bikini Fitness over 163 cm category, recalls her uncertain beginnings at the gym. "At first my passion for fitness and healthy eating drove me to compete in Ladies Bikini Fitness." This passion has certainly ignited and has led her to a first place at USSA and a fourth-place finish at national level.
The journey has not been without its difficulties. "Early morning cardio, late-night weightlifting, and countless sacrifices were part of the process," Kudzi says. "There were moments I wanted to quit, but something inside me kept pushing forward."
For both women, competing in bodybuilding has been about more than physical transformation. "This journey has been about mental toughness, discipline and embracing self-love," says Kudzi. "When I won first place at USSA and qualified for nationals, I was overwhelmed with pride."
She admits that she was nervous but ready on the day of the national championships. "Placing fourth in the country was a dream come true."
As these women continue to break barriers in bodybuilding, they serve as role models for others, proving that dedication and passion know no gender. "We ready for whatever comes next – International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation here we come!"
