In a hall filled with eager students and guests, the air buzzed with anticipation as the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Humanities prepared to host its annual Dean’s Merit Awards.
The Dean’s Merit List recognises students who achieve an average of 75% and above in all their modules. Only 138 students from the Faculty of Humanities– just 2% of the 7 000 enrolled – earned a place on the 2025 list for excelling academically in the previous year.
On 18 July 2025, the executive dean of the faculty, Prof Dumisani Moyo, welcomed students and guests virtually to the Mahikeng Campus, stating that the ceremony was a celebration of hard work and perseverance during the 2024 academic year.
“You have set yourself apart as emerging scholars who have embraced challenges and striven for mastery in your fields,” said Prof Moyo. “Through your dedication and unwavering pursuit of excellence, you’ve earned a place on the 2025 Dean’s Merit List. Wear this achievement with pride and let it remind you of what you are capable of.”
The humanities matter
The keynote address was delivered by Amantle Mothelesi, a philosophy lecturer and PhD candidate at the NWU. She congratulated students for their efforts and urged them to mentor and inspire others.
“You are the torchbearers of the faculty and the institution,” said Amantle. “Through mastering the content of your courses, you have shown that scholarship remains a powerful and transformative activity. In a time when the relevance of humanities is often questioned, you have reminded us why these disciplines matter.”
She encouraged students to pursue further studies. “Register for that postgraduate qualification even if it makes you cry. We go through a lot of emotions, but it is worth it.”
Prof Mpho Chaka, deputy dean for teaching and learning, closed the event with a message of appreciation. Drawing from personal experience, he reminded students of the importance of perseverance and staying focused on their goals.
“Your achievement matters,” said Prof Chaka. “It may not feel significant now, but it will shape who you become tomorrow. Stay on your path. You’ve earned your seat at the table – now use it. Open the door for others. Lift as you rise.”
