Tobie van Dyk

Prof. Tobie van Dyk is an extensively published author of applied linguistic work, focusing on academic literacies theory and practice, academic reading and writing development, and in particular academic language ability testing. He is considered an authority in particularly the fields of academic literacies and language testing – all focus areas under the broad theme of language for specific purposes within applied linguistics. Apart from his research, he is also node manager in the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) and director in the Inter-institutional Centre for Language Development and Assessment (ICELDA). These two entities contribute extensively towards applied linguistic product development, and research and innovation. The former includes development of academic support materials in writing specifically, multilingual resource development such as academic wordlists, tests and educational videos, games that advance multilingualism, and the development of a multi-level, multi-genre, multilingual learner corpus of academic writing. The latter includes a focus on academic articles, academic books and textbooks, as well as postgraduate supervision. Prof. Van Dyk has an extensive local academic network and strong ties to universities in Europe, Canada and the USA.
