Dr Anja Visser is a Senior Lecturer and Subject Group Leader of Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education at the North-West University. Her expertise lies in Curriculum Studies, social justice issues related to education, human rights education, teacher education, and trafficking in persons as a curriculum concern. Her scholarship focuses on how education systems, curricula and teacher education programmes can respond more meaningfully to complex societal issues, particularly those affecting vulnerable learners and communities.
Her research has contributed to scholarly conversations on trafficking in persons, child labour, human rights education, and curriculum transformation in higher education. She has published in accredited journals and contributed book chapters that foreground the role of teachers and teacher education in addressing trafficking in persons as a social justice concern. Her work is situated within the South African education context while also engaging with broader international debates in Curriculum Studies.
Dr Visser’s expertise is further reflected in her postgraduate supervision, external moderation, thesis examination, peer-review work, curriculum development, academic leadership, and public engagement. She has supervised and co-supervised postgraduate studies related to curriculum implementation, curriculum differentiation, human rights education, decolonisation, overcrowded classrooms, and education for sustainable development. She has also contributed to public awareness initiatives on human trafficking and has participated in media and community engagements on this topic.
Through her teaching, research, supervision, leadership and public scholarship, Dr Visser contributes to the advancement of Curriculum Studies as a field concerned with ethical, socially just, responsive and transformative education.
