On 14 September the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Music proudly hosted its Music Ensemble Concert, presenting and celebrating its student groups’ remarkable talent.
During the event, students, staff and partners of the school also celebrated school director Dr Yvonne-Marie Brand whose directorship of six years had come to an end.
Prof Jaco Kruger delivered a special message to Dr Brand.
“Although I was initially reluctant to bid our director farewell, it eventually dawned on me that we are not dealing with an emotional parting, but instead celebrating Dr Brand’s happy reunion with the school’s lecturing, performing and research staff,” he said.
Various colleagues say Dr Brand’s biggest achievement has been carrying out her duties in the spirit of ubuntu. She is known not only as a hardworking, competent leader, but also as a caring person who is always friendly, polite, patient, respectful and tactful.
Meanwhile, Prof Kruger also used the opportunity to bid farewell to another colleague, Dr Cara Stacey, senior lecturer in African music. She joined the NWU in 2020 and is now taking up a new position at Wits University.
This year was the first time the school organised a concert of this magnitude. The school extended a word of gratitude to numerous strategic partners, including the Hillensberg Trust, the Mzansi Philharmonic, the National Arts Council, Shoprite and the Rupert Music Foundation.
The School of Music has been a flagship school for many years, with its staff, students and alumni enjoying international recognition in the fields of community engagement, performance, research, teaching and learning.
Its students hail from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives, talents and passions to the school and the university.
