The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Ikateleng project serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for academically gifted learners hailing from underprivileged communities across South Africa.
Established in 1988, this ground-breaking initiative has been igniting the flames of knowledge and driving academic achievement for an astounding 35 years.
The Ikateleng project has embarked on yet another inspiring 2024 academic cycle, with its doors open to welcome bright minds from all corners of the nation. With registration ongoing at its vibrant centres, this year's journey promises to be nothing short of transformative.
Spanning across the North West, Gauteng, Northern Cape and Free State provinces, the project casts its net far and wide, reaching out to more than 1 200 talented Grade 10 to 12 learners from more than 65 high schools.
This is not just about education; it is about levelling the playing field and empowering these young individuals to rise above their circumstances and achieve greatness.
At the heart of Ikateleng lies its dedicated centres, strategically located in Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom, Mahikeng, Lichtenburg, Mooi Nooi and Kimberley. The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum across two main streams.
The first is natural sciences, covering mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences and English; and the second economic and management sciences, which focuses on mathematics, accounting, economics/business studies and English.
Beyond textbooks and classroom walls, Ikateleng enriches the lives of its learners with a variety of extracurricular activities. A standout feature is the comprehensive Career Orientation programme, meticulously crafted by the NWU's marketing and recruitment team. In April, an NWU applications campaign is underway, where Ikateleng learners will be assisted in submitting their applications for the NWU’s 2025 academic year.
“The Ikateleng project is more than just an educational programme; it is a lifeline for many learners, offering them a chance to excel academically and prepare for a brighter future,” says Lemogang Masethe, Ikateleng programme coordinator.
With each passing year, Ikateleng continues to prove its value, empowering South African learners to reach their full potential.
