Elderly ladies treated in honour of Women's month

By Loveness Hulwane

On 23 August, in commemoration of Women's Month, elderly residents from nearby assisted living facilities were invited to the Riverside Sun Hotel to attend an informative session, sponsored by the Stakeholder Relations office at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus.

The event, organised by the Gauteng Community Safety Department and presented by Lifeline Vaal Services, not only aimed to be educational, but also to offer these women the opportunity to socialise, exchange stories and experiences, and to develop new friendships.

"I felt it was appropriate to honour the elderly during this Women's Month because I have realised that they are often neglected. We have also gathered today to hear what you as elders have to say about our communities, and to appreciate you as beautiful women who have graced us with your presence," said Reggie Modiba, organiser of the event and Gauteng Community Safety official.

The morning’s proceedings included various presentations. Shelly Hughes, center manager of Lifeline Vaal Services, shared information about their services, and sergeant Beverley Diphoko from the South African Police Service spoke about the protection services available to the women and how to identify and report criminal activity that could pose a threat.

Tshepiso Montso, a representative from Social Development, addressed the ladies on social issues, such as the abuse of elderly women, and Dolly Sophia Matsoso Radebe, a representative from the Department of Health, spoke about senior wellness, focusing on activities and practices that promote emotional, physical, mental and social well-being. Pastor Pinky Nkabinde also delivered a motivational talk, offering words of encouragement to the women to help them feel more resilient in the face of challenges at home and in their communities.

This was followed by a question-and-answer session addressing any societal issues troubling the elderly women at home and in their communities.

Attendees were then treated to a lively and well-coordinated theatre performance by the Bophelong Elderly Day Care Centre, with musical entertainment provided by the junior jazz band from Kgutlo Tharo Secondary School. The women joined in enthusiastically, snapping their fingers, tapping their feet, and swaying to the music.
