The economy, inflation and where to invest

Prof Dawie Roodt from the North-West University’s (NWU) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences recently hosted a webinar titled “Budget Speech 2021: The effect on wealth and investment”.

Prof Roodt who is also a renowned economist, discussed a number of issues during the session, including local and international economies, inflation and the recent South African budget speech.

He says the international and national economy are growing bigger and much faster than most people anticipated. He also touched on what is going on internationally, and trends that will affect the size of the world economy in future.

Prof Roodt also spoke about whether international inflation will or will not be a problem.

“Knowing what will happen with regards to inflation is very important, since it helps asset managers decide when and how to invest for their clients,” he said.

Prof Roodt shared an example of an asset allocation portfolio in an inflationary and deflationary environment, and also gave a depth overview of the local economy, inflation and the recent budget speech.

He said South Africa has a very weak economic growth and that the country is currently within a depreciation.

“Over the past couple of years, state spending has been going up, and the economy is also over taxed. The only way to get more money, the finance minister needs to cut down on state spending.”
