The North-West University (NWU) Eagles showed their ability to respond under pressure when they bounced back from their first defeat of the 2026 Varsity Netball season to beat UFS Kovsies 50-48 in Bloemfontein on Monday, 31 August.

The two-point victory at the Callie Human Hall was a repeat of the 2025 final and put the defending champions back on the winning track. The Eagles had suffered a 60-43 defeat to UJ just a day earlier. 

For NWU head coach Elsunet du Plessis, the difference between the two performances was the connection among her players.

“What pleased me most was how connected we were today. Yesterday we struggled to find our rhythm and were disconnected at times, but today we really played for each other and backed one another throughout the match,” she said.

There was little to separate the NWU and Kovsies throughout the contest. The NWU led 13-11 after the first quarter and took a narrow 24-23 lead into half-time. Kovsies fought back to level the score at 37-37 after the third quarter. 

The Eagles then opened a five-goal lead in the final quarter. Kovsies responded, but the NWU held firm to secure the 50-48 win. 

The result was important after UJ had ended the unbeaten start by the NWU in the competition. The Eagles had opened their title defence with victories over Madibaz and UP-Tuks before suffering their first loss against UJ. 

Elsunet said the two matches in Bloemfontein reinforced the importance of collective effort as the Eagles continue their title defence.

“The biggest lesson is the value of playing as a team. When we stay connected, trust each other and work for one another, it makes a massive difference to our performance.”

With three wins from their opening four matches, the Eagles have already experienced both sides of the pressure that comes with defending a Varsity Netball crown. Their response against Kovsies showed that setbacks can also provide important lessons during a long campaign.
