Dr Ndumiso Mazibuko - from lecture halls to industry leadership

The North-West University (NWU) continues to produce graduates who shape industries, influence policy and contribute meaningfully to society. Among these distinguished alumni is Dr Ndumiso Vusumuzi Mazibuko, a seasoned agricultural economist whose career spans over 15 years at the forefront of agricultural development in South Africa.

A leader in agricultural economics

Dr Mazibuko is a highly accomplished economist, holding a PhD, an MSc, BSc Hons and a BSc in agricultural economics, as well as an MBA. His career has been defined by a strong commitment to advancing the agricultural sector of South Africa, particularly through innovative funding mechanisms and policy development.

One of his most notable contributions has been his role in implementing the statutory levy system, which has enabled the commercial agricultural sector to sustainably fund research, consumer education, export promotion, transformation initiatives and production development since the deregulation of the sector in 1997.

His impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2020, Dr Mazibuko was recognised as one of the 200 Young South Africans by the Mail & Guardian, a testament to his leadership and influence in the field of economics and education.

Proud NWU graduate

Dr Mazibuko’s academic journey is deeply rooted at the NWU, where he completed his degrees in agricultural economics.

Reflecting on his time at the NWU, he describes it as both enriching and formative:

“My time at the NWU was filled with valuable academic experiences, meaningful friendships and personal growth. It laid a strong foundation for my career.”

Driving the dairy sector forward

Today, Dr Mazibuko serves as chief economist at the South African Milk Processors’ Organisation (SAMPRO), where he plays a strategic role in shaping the dairy industry. His work focuses on industry information, trade policy and sector development, ensuring that the industry remains competitive and aligned with national priorities.

His day-to-day responsibilities are multifaceted. He works closely with industry stakeholders to generate and communicate market insights, contributes to trade policy discussions and leads the work of the dairy industry in the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan (AAMP).

In addition, he provides expertise on critical issues such as environmental sustainability, animal welfare and animal health, while supporting transformation initiatives like the black enterprise development project of Milk SA. His influence extends globally through his representation of South Africa at the International Dairy Federation.

A career built on impact

Before joining SAMPRO, Dr Mazibuko spent more than a decade at the National Agricultural Marketing Council as a senior economist. There, he led the livestock portfolio in the statutory measures division and played a key role in overseeing transformation initiatives funded through industry levies.

He also served as national coordinator of the Strategic Integrated Project 11, part of the national infrastructure plan of the presidential infrastructure coordination commission, focusing on agro-logistics and rural economies. Furthermore, he contributed to the development of the AAMP, a key framework guiding the growth and transformation of the sector.

A lifelong connection to the NWU

Dr Mazibuko’s connection to the NWU extends beyond his own academic journey. His family shares a strong legacy with the institution, with his father, wife, sister and brother-in-law all counting among its alumni. This deep-rooted connection reinforces his belief in the impact of the university.

“I can confidently say that the NWU offers far more than just a qualification,” he says. “It provides a solid foundation for both personal and professional growth, supported by dedicated lecturers and an environment that encourages critical thinking and practical application.”

Encouraging the next generation

Dr Mazibuko strongly encourages prospective students to consider the NWU, highlighting its academic excellence, vibrant student life and opportunities for holistic development.

“It is a place where you build meaningful networks, develop lifelong friendships and grow into a well-rounded individual,” he notes.

Carrying the NWU legacy forward

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr Mazibuko values spending time with family and friends, staying connected to nature and maintaining an active lifestyle.

His message to fellow alumni is one of unity and purpose:
