The North-West University (NWU), in conjunction with South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), will host various National Science Week activities from 1 to 6 August 2021.
National Science Week (NSW), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, is an annual countrywide celebration of science, engineering and technology. During this week, various stakeholders and role players conduct activities to promote awareness of the value of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI), attracting thousands learners and members of the public.
The theme of this year’s science week is “Making it possible through science”.
Keeping up with the practice of recognising the United Nations (UN) international observances, the NSW 2021 will incorporate activities to celebrate the UN’s International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV) 2021, with a specific focus on local discoveries and innovations in plant production or sciences.
“These activities will be in the form of webinars, documentaries, virtual pre-recorded exhibitions and live virtual exhibitions. It will be aimed at learners and students, educators, the public, journalists, indigenous knowledge holders, researchers and scientists – to name but a few,” explains Lerato Molebatsi, manager of the Mahikeng Science Centre.
