It was an event as unique as it was entertaining. It was peculiar and inventive. It was a blast. On Sunday, 18 October 2020, the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus hosted one of three simultaneous legs of the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon – Elite Invitational, with the men’s overall winner, Edward Mothibi, running on the Potchefstroom Campus.
The other legs of the race were hosted by UP-Tuks in Pretoria and the University of Cape Town in the Mother City.
Mothibi won in an adjusted time of 02:13:11, followed by Phillimon Mathiba (02:14:49) in Pretoria and Philani Buthelezi (02:17:26), also from Pretoria. Annie Bothma was the overall women’s winner in an adjusted time of 02:33:35 in Cape Town, followed by Ann Ashworth (02:41:51) in Potchefstroom and Nontokozo Mkhize (02:46:42), also in Cape Town.
Due to strict Covid-19 regulations, the race took on an unfamiliar guise, with only a select few athletes running at each location, while other participants competed virtually on their own. On an organisational as well as a competitive level it was a stellar effort by all involved on the Potchefstroom Campus.
Here we go!
