Congratulations, Comrades champs Tete and Adele!

They did it again! Tete Dijana and Adele Broodryk are on top of the ultramarathon world after both athletes delivered superlative Comrades 2023 performances.

Dijana won the men’s division in a record time of 5:14.01, which is the second consecutive win for the employee of Mi7, an external security service provider to the NWU, who can be found on the Mahikeng Campus when on duty.

Broodryk, a senior lecturer at the School for Human Movement Sciences, came second in the women’s division in a time of 5:56.26, some 30 minutes better than 2022 when she finished third. She is only the fourth women in the history of the Comrades Marathon to break the six-hour barrier.

Prof Bismark Tyobeka, principal and vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), was unequivocal in his praise for the two stellar athletes.

“Congratulations to both Tete and Adele, you were superb. Your determination and commitment are inspiring and the NWU is proud to call you our own. We were with you every step of the way and I am exceedingly proud of your achievements. I also want to commend every other athlete from the NWU who took part in the 2023 Comrades Marathon. It takes a lot of character and no short amount of bravery to tackle this 90 km task. I am very proud of each one of you.”

Tete Dijana, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, and Adele Broodryk.
