A commitment to matric excellence – the NWU way

This year, the North-West University (NWU) will see more than 2 200 eager Grade 12 learners from various districts in the North West and Gauteng Province descend to the campuses in Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark for the annual Matric Winter School programme.

This annual programme, facilitated by qualified and experienced tutors, will commence on 23 June and end on 4 July 2019.

The primary aim of the programme is to assist learners with problem areas within the subjects offered. It also helps learners prepare for their final examination, with the added goal of meeting the admission requirements of tertiary institutions, including the NWU.

The Winter School programme offers tuition in subjects like Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences, Chemistry, Agriculture, Geography, Accounting, Economics, English and Business Economics. Life skills such as leadership, time management, study methods and are also addressed.

Previously, the programme has recorded significant improvement of participants’ matric pass rates. The programme has also received positive feedback from both learners and educators observing noticeable improvements in study methods and academic performance.

“The project affords learners an opportunity to sharpen their skills for their matric examinations and to broaden their minds,” says Celeste Rossouw, senior stakeholder specialist from the NWU’s Corporate Relations and Marketing department. “The on-campus winter schools also give pupils a taste of university life where formal lectures are followed by smaller group tutorials.”
