Collaboration brings meals to first-year students

During registration and orientation at the start of the 2026 academic year, first-year students at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus received meals through a collaboration between the Students’ Campus Council (SCC) and private sector donors.

Together, the SCC and bakery companies Albany and Blue Ribbon made sure that first-year students did not go hungry.

“This project showed that working together can make a difference for students,” said Lesego Molema, SCC fundraising and RAG officer. “Seeing students come together, sharing a meal and supporting each other reminded us why this work matters.”

He emphasised the importance of donor involvement in student wellbeing. “Donor support helps ensure every student gets something to eat while participating in institution programmes, which is a big deal for their wellbeing.”

Lesego thanked all stakeholders for their support. “I also want to extend my gratitude to the SCC for their collective support, the acting director of student life, Lerato Wana, as well as Albany and Blue Ribbon for making this possible,” he said.

The collaboration between the SCC, donors and university staff highlighted the impact of teamwork in creating an environment where students feel welcomed and supported as they begin their studies at the NWU.
