Classic Men 2017: How do you define a gentleman?

It is almost time for the second annual Classic Men Symposium to be hosted on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark. This event – which is regarded as one of the highlights of the organised student life calendar – represents a dynamic collaboration between the Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC), affiliated student bodies and the campus’s Alumni Office.

On 28 July 2017 more than 300 male students will gather to define the qualities that contribute towards the ethos of a gentleman. According to Thami Mongezi, the CSRC projects officer and coordinator of the symposium, the event aims to challenge beliefs. “It is a sad reality that many young men grow up with an absent father and as such male role models are either not in the picture or are emotionally unavailable. The results speak for themselves: low self-worth, blurred boundaries, unhealthy habits and emotional voids,” explains Thami. The event therefore – in short, aims to make young men aware of the impact they have in their respective communities.

The event will see the launch of the 2017 rendition of the very popular Gentlemen’s Club on the campus and a high-profile line-up of speakers will further add to the bearing of the event. The line-up include the likes of Dr Ilyayambwa Mwanawina, Mr Jabu Mbongo and Mr Sipho Mbele.
