Casual Day 2024: Celebrating diversity and inclusion

Join the North-West University (NWU) Wellness office and Student Counselling and Development (SCD) in supporting Casual Day 2024.

This year the annual event will take place on Friday, 6 September and focuses on promoting inclusion and equity for people with disabilities.

Casual Day is a national campaign coordinated by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) to raise awareness and funds for the rights and opportunities of persons with disabilities. Participation in the campaign involves a contribution of R20 for a Casual Day sticker, allowing individuals to express their unique interpretation of the annual theme through their attire and, in doing so, support the full inclusion and equity of persons with disabilities.

"This Casual Day, we invite everyone to celebrate diversity and inclusion. By purchasing a Casual Day ticket, you’re not just dressing down – you’re stepping up for a cause that empowers individuals with disabilities and supports inclusive education," says Genevieve Poodhun, a wellness specialist at the Vanderbiljpark Campus and one of the organisers.

She adds that this year’s theme is "I SEE YOU".

"It isn’t just about using your eyes—it’s about really ‘seeing’ people. It’s about spotting the spark that makes each of us special and appreciating the quirks, strengths, and stories that shape who we are. It’s about seeing the hurdles and the potential, recognising people for who they truly are. Let’s all take a moment to look beyond the surface and celebrate the vibrant, diverse mix that makes our nation so amazing. Together, we can create a world where everyone is seen, heard and celebrated for the unique awesomeness they bring to the table."

Genevieve adds that the proceeds from Casual Day ticket sales will be used by NCPD to support organisations that champion the rights and opportunities of persons with disabilities.

NWU employees are also encouraged to declare and register their disabilities by contacting Tshepi Sizane at 018 285 2881.

This is how you can participate:

  • Show your solidarity: Purchase your Casual Day ticket for just R20 and wear it proudly, knowing that you are part of a movement advocating for inclusion.
  • Inspire others: Lead by example – demonstrate the importance of community involvement and social responsibility.
  • Embrace the opportunity: Dress in a way that showcases your individuality while supporting a noble cause.
