Campus celebrates SA’s diverse cultural heritage

Diversity is as part of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark as biltong, bunny chow, melktert and chakalaka is of the South African way of life.

On 12 October 2017 the campus hosted its annual Cultural Festival with staff and students taking part in the festivities. The festival is organised under the auspices of the Directorate: Student Life and the Arts and Culture portfolio of the Student Campus Committee (SCC)

This year marks the sixth rendition of the festival and the purpose of the event is to foster a sense of shared belonging amongst the campus community. According to Lethiwe Kubheka, organiser of the event, the festival furthermore aims to share information about the different cultures represented at the campus. The 2017 theme was: “The best of my culture”.

Each residence (11 in total) was given a specific culture and participants had to demonstrate their assigned culture’s values, traditions and way of life. The day’s programme saw students take part in an array of categories, including: theatre productions and drama, poetry, dancing, cultural fashion show and a cultural cuisine presentation.

“The Cultural Festival represents a highlight on the campus’s annual events calendar,” says Lethiwe and adds that the campus values the collective strength of diversity. This event has become a bridge between the cultural divides that exists and she believes the event will continue to serve as a living legacy of the university.

One of the categories in which the students competed was a cultural cuisine presentation.
