Bodybuilding team claims fifth USSA championship title

The bodybuilding team from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus once again emerged victorious in the national University Sports South Africa (USSA) championship for 2023.

This is the fifth time the team scooped the top spot, despite facing stiff competition from other teams.

This year the event took place at Forte Hare University in the Eastern Cape.

Team coach Raphael Ntumba says this was a moment of immense pride for all associated with the team, and that their victory is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of the 22 team members who put in countless hours of training and preparation.

"The team's success has not come easy, and it's a result of their relentless pursuit of excellence. They spent countless hours in the gym, pushing themselves to their limits and constantly striving to improve. They also paid close attention to their nutrition, ensuring that they were fuelling their bodies with the right nutrients to support their intense workouts," adds coach Raphael.

He says the team members also worked on their mental toughness and resilience, which helped them stay focused and motivated even when faced with setbacks or challenges.

"They visualised themselves succeeding and believed in themselves and their abilities. Overall, their victory is a well-deserved one."

Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, says the team's unwavering commitment to the sport is a source of inspiration for the entire university community.

"Their victory is a significant milestone that has put the team and the university on the map. It's a testament to the power of hard work, dedication and passion, and it's a reminder that anything is possible with the right mindset and attitude. We are proud of our bodybuilding team, and wish them continued success in their future endeavours,"
