The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus ended the month of August with an unforgettable dance extravaganza on 31 August 2024, celebrating the dance team’s talent and raising funds for upcoming events.
This annual event at the Great Hall showcased 10 vibrant ballroom and Latin dance styles, including the tango, slow foxtrot and rumba.
The evening was not just about the spectacular performances, but also about bringing together the university, the local community, and participants' parents.
“We wanted to give back to the community through the art of dance,” says dance sports coach Kevin Motaung. He adds that the NWU's dedication to community engagement was evident with local groups such as the Ethnocentric Community project and Mmabana Dance Sport also in attendance.
One of the evening's standout moments came from student Motheo Maroto, who performed a traditional Muslim belly dance to showcase the rich cultural heritage of his community.
Coach Motaung also proudly shared the success of his students, Tebogo Baas and Matlhogonolo Badibe, who have been crowned South African Dance Foundation and Youth Rising Stars Latin champions in 2024.
With deep artistic meaning embedded in each performance, the NWU dance students expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support from fellow students, parents, and the Mahikeng community.
The dance extravaganza on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus was a spectacular showcase of passion, talent and community spirit.
