Alumnus earns a spot in Banyana Banyana team for COSAFA Cup 2023

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Khensani Nkuna has achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a spot on the Banyana Banyana squad for the 2023 COSAFA Cup. The South African-hosted tournament is currently underway and will end on 15 October.

Khensani's journey from the NWU to the national team has been nothing short of inspiring.

Currently showcasing her football prowess in the SAFA Women's League under the banner of Hollywoodbets Super League's Roya AM team, Khensani's recent debut on 4 October against Malawi at Lucas Moripe Stadium was a defining moment in her career.

Notably, she not only marked her debut, but also etched her name on the scoresheet with her maiden goal for the national team.

Hailing from Maboloka in Brits, Khensani's football journey started in 2004 when she joined her brothers' team. Over the years, she honed her skills in various defensive positions, ultimately becoming an invaluable asset on the field.

"I am overwhelmed and very happy to be here. There is no better feeling than being called up to represent your country. It's every girl's dream to play for their nation at some point in her career," says Khensani.

Her football journey has been intertwined with her academic pursuits. While studying at the NWU, Khensani played for the Golden Ladies, making her mark on the football scene.

Her remarkable talent didn't go unnoticed, leading to her selection to represent the NWU Mafikeng Ladies in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournaments in 2018 and 2019.

Testament to her exceptional skills, Khensani was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2019 USSA's Stream B. Furthermore, her contributions were instrumental in propelling her team to the coveted Stream A. This success at university level set the stage for her national team call-up, an achievement that resonates with her unwavering dedication and passion for the sport.

As Khensani continues to make strides in her football career, her journey from the NWU to the COSAFA Cup exemplifies the indomitable spirit and talent of South African women in sports.
