Alumni shine bright during annual Caxton Excellence Awards

Two alumni from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, Wouter Pienaar and Ettienne van Rensburg, took centre stage during the 28th annual Caxton Excellence Awards which recently took place at the Silver Star Casino in Krugersdorp.

The Caxton group is one of the largest publishers and printers in South Africa and is a major participant in the South African print media industry. Apart from being involved in publishing no less than 120 of the country’s regional community newspapers, The Citizen daily newspaper and 13 magazines, the group employs approximately 5 500 individuals.

During the award ceremony Wouter took to the podium for Best Sport Photo of the Year and received recognition as one of the top three sport writers in the country. Wouter completed a BA-degree in Language Practice and Communication in 2013 and an honours degree in Communication in 2014.

Ettienne was awarded as Sport Journalist of the Year and received two second place rankings in the categories Sport Photography and Photographer of the Year. He completed his BA-degree in 1998 and obtained his honours degree in Sociology in 2001.

Both Ettienne and Wouter work as Sport Editors for MooiVaal Media, a Caxton and Media24 affiliate. Ettienne is based in Vanderbijlpark (Vaalweekblad) and Wouter in Potchefstroom (Potchefstroom Herald).
