African Universities unite to shape a Sustainable Future at 2026 Conference

When communities across Africa face droughts, floods, and shifting climates, the solutions often begin in the minds of innovators, researchers, and leaders who are committed to a more sustainable future. In March 2026, these changemakers will gather at the Protea Hotel in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, for the International Conference on Green and Sustainable Development (ICGSD) 2026.

Under the theme Reimagining Innovation Pathways for Sustainability: Research, Practice and Policy, the conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, innovators, and thought leaders from across Africa and the globe. The goal is simple but profound: to share ideas, learn from one another, and take action that can positively affect lives and communities.

Following the success of its inaugural edition in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2025, ICGSD 2026 will highlight African-led solutions that blend indigenous knowledge, emerging technologies, and afrocentric innovation. Delegates will explore how these approaches can guide sustainable research, shape policy, and inspire practical change on the ground.

The North-West University (NWU) Business School is hosting the conference in partnership with the University of Kigali (Rwanda), University of Fort Hare (South Africa), Tshwane University of Technology (South Africa), and KCA University (Kenya). Together, these institutions are demonstrating how collaboration across borders and disciplines can produce meaningful, real-world impact.

Professor Joseph Lekunze, Chairperson of ICGSD 2026, said: “This conference is more than an academic gathering; it is a call to action. African institutions are reimagining how innovation can tackle the pressing sustainability challenges our communities face. ICGSD 2026 will bring people together to share knowledge, inspire solutions, and create hope. While Africa contributes least to global warming, its people suffer the most. This conference gives us a platform to lead, innovate, and make a difference.”

Call for Papers are now Open

Researchers and practitioners can now submit abstracts and papers that align with the conference theme. Submission details are available on the official conference website.

Delegates will engage with keynote addresses, interactive workshops, expert panels, and exhibitions that demonstrate how ideas can turn into action and research can transform communities. ICGSD 2026 promises not just discussion but inspiration, collaboration, and a shared commitment to building a sustainable future for Africa and the world.
