Academic shares insights on AI and the chartered accountancy profession

Since the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), accounting students have been worried about their future in the profession. Kurt Naicker CA(SA), a senior lecturer at the School of Accounting Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), recently shared his insights on how to keep students motivated and inspired in the age of AI in the ASA Magazine.

The main goal of Kurt's article was to reassure students about the relevance and future prospects of a career in accountancy, especially in the context of rapid technological advancements. "Many students are uncertain about the relevance of studying to become a chartered accountant (CA), taking into account the rapid advancements in technology and digitalisation. The point I wanted to make is that AI will enhance their role and not compete against it. Although the skill set of an accountant has changed vastly, we still need to make critical financial decisions," says Kurt. He emphasises the significance of pursuing a CA qualification by highlighting the impact of small wins and the power of mentorship. "I have always encouraged students to break down their long-term goals into smaller, manageable tasks. I know from my own experience that passing one exam or mastering one complex topic can boost confidence and create momentum. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to the end goal."

Kurt also stresses the transformative effect of mentorship, reflecting on his own experience of being inspired by those who had walked the path before him.

"As an academic and senior lecturer, I have had the privilege of working closely with students who are pursuing their CA qualification. Having walked the same path myself, I understand the challenges that come with it," he says.

He reiterates that the reward in the end is worth every sacrifice, especially in the face of rapid advancements in AI and automation in the accounting profession. "The CA profession has never been more relevant or dynamic, and AI is not a threat but an opportunity for those willing to embrace change. It is important to stay motivated through tough times, persevere and to cultivate motivation with the right approach.” Despite the changes brought by AI, Kurt firmly believes that the skills, discipline and expertise gained through a CA qualification are invaluable and will continue to be in high demand. He encourages students to embrace the future, assuring them that their CA qualification would open doors they never imagined, and that AI would allow them to focus on higher-level tasks and bring more value to their roles. Kurt's message to every student questioning whether to keep going is simple: stay the course, embrace the future, and know that your CA qualification will pave the way for a rewarding and impactful career.
