Academic honoured as Forbes Africa 2025 Over 30 Under 50 Honouree

Medical biological scientist Puseletso Manyaka-Lesofe from the Centre for Human Metabolomics at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU) has been selected as one of Forbes Africa’s 2025 Over 30 Under 50 honourees for her contributions to science and academia.

Puseletso says that being recognised by Forbes Africa is both a tremendous honour and a validation of her dedication to medical science, research and mentorship. "This recognition reaffirms my passion for advancing healthcare, supporting early-career scientists, and making an impact on the research landscape in South Africa and Africa.".

She adds that this acknowledgement also highlights the critical work of laboratory professionals in diagnostics, clinical research and capacity building.

Through her leadership at the African Institute of Medical Scientists, Puseletso has played a vital role in connecting more than 6 000 professionals across South Africa and Africa. The institute provides training, mentorship and opportunities, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Puseletso’s initiative, “Shadow A Scientist”, offers students real-world exposure to careers in the biomedical sciences, further empowering the next generation of scientists.

Puseletso believes that Forbes Africa’s recognition highlights the importance of investing in scientific research and public health innovation across the continent. She hopes it will inspire more funding, policy change and confidence in young scientists.

She encourages young scientists to be proactive, seek mentorship and never stop learning.

“The scientific field is competitive, but opportunities exist for those who take the initiative. Build networks, apply for scholarships and research grants, and engage with platforms that offer career guidance.”
